AFA Approves 8-point Asian Peasant Agenda

The Executive Committee (ExeCom) of AFA approved an 8-point Asian Peasant during its 6th meeting held last October 26 in the boardroom of the Vietnam Farmers’ Union in Hanoi. The Agenda was a synthesis of the results of the three sub-regional conferences AFA held the past two months. It was a response to problems they identified in the areas of production and technology, marketing and trade, human resource development and farmers’ rights. As approved, the AFA, in the next two years, will:

  1. 1. promote sustainable agricultural policies and practices
  2.  study and promote alternatives to economic globalization, automation and mechanization – where these alternatives are sustainable, farmer friendly, appropriate
  3. promote agriculture among the young and build their interests towards farming
  4.  promote fair and just treatment of farmers in developing countries
  5. push for reduction in subsidies in agriculture by developed countries
  6. promote food security measures for small farmers
  7. promote farmer-to-farmer market exchanges
  8. push for an ASEAN regional ARRD law
